Krzysztof Pennar

Principal Engineer - Safety Case, Torc Robotics

Krzysztof Pennar is Principal Engineer for Safety Case at Torc Robotics, where he leads the development of structured safety arguments for autonomous driving systems. A recognized expert in both ISO 26262 and ISO 21448 (SOTIF), Krzysztof is a contributing author of the SOTIF standard and brings nearly 20 years of cross-industry experience in high-stakes safety domains. Prior to joining Torc, he spent eight years at General Motors advancing AV safety with Cruise LLC, and worked for over a decade in the launch vehicle industry with Northrup Grumman, leading propulsion subsystem design and launch operations for multiple missions. Krzysztof holds an M.S. and B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Arizona State University and has also contributed to propulsion research at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The Pop in Your Job
We owe the public and our stakeholders an elegant explanation of safety. It should be simple but not simplistic. I love offering a harmonized view of how many safety domains come together holistically and to provide this with integrity.

Less Details

  • How do we define and structure an “end-to-end” safety case that evolves with system maturity?
  • What are the challenges of capturing distinct safety elements from functional safety, SOTIF, AI safety, cybersecurity, and operational safety?
  • How can safety claims be validated and communicated across internal and external stakeholders (e.g. regulators, partners)?
  • What lessons can be drawn from aerospace safety certification that apply—or don’t apply—to AV safety cases?
  • What challenges do we face in scaling a safety case across diverse ODDs and vehicle platforms?
