Turning highly automated vehicles a reality on our streets requires a careful and thorough process, considering its novelty and the lack of experience with this new operation. This is especially important regarding safety, as this lack of experience can lead to a high number of hazards that are still unknown during development and need to be addressed and mitigated before starting commercial operation. This presentation is focused on the process defined to ensure a safe operation of highly automated prototypes, allowing the testing of these new functionalities while at the same time providing the development team with valuable feedback. This feedback is especially important so that any hazard that may arise during the testing phase can be included in the Safety Assessment and mitigated, thus reducing the number of unknown scenarios as referred by the ISO PAS 21448.
